Book Handbook of Bird Biology (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) Review :

This is a luxurious, colorful, 700-page survey of bird biology. It is a textbook—not a handbook—meant for college students or others interested in ornithology. Its 15 chapters by 18 authors discuss avian evolution, taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, plumage, flight, behavior, movement, ecology, and conservation.Don't judge this book by its glossy cover. The book suffers from poor editorial oversight. The chapters vary in quality, from very high to very low. The book feels like a collection of articles that were written independently of each other and dropped into their slots by editors who did not require consistently high quality. Some chapters are very good. The chapter on plumage describes, among many feathery topics, the intricate structures of feathers, and tells how they grow. The chapter about mating and social behavior gives examples of amazing mating constructs, like the bowers of bowerbirds, and interprets them in terms of ecological genetics. Breeding biology—territories, nests, eggs, young, parental care—gets lively treatment in another nice chapter. Some other chapters are sorely inadequate. The chapter on flight, at 20 pages, is the shortest chapter in the book (next shortest chapter, 38 pages). It fails to explain lift, ignores effects of altitude and temperature, says nothing about the energetics of long migration flights. The writing is disorganized and verbose; figures have incomprehensible labels. The chapter on taxonomy is spotty, uneven, and poorly organized. The chapter fails to define the taxon “Bird.” It says that cladistics gave phylogenetics “a sound and logical theoretical footing,” but it doesn't says what that footing was. A 16-page table lists bird orders and families, but it does not explain how these taxa are defined or how they relate to each other.
Do you have the 2004 edition of this book and are looking for new, better, updated version? Do you want to be able to cite from an ornithology handbook to share knowledge? Are you looking for in-depth explanations of functional bird anatomy? This is not the book for you. I bought this book after recently purchasing a used copy of the 2004 edition. Which, I may add, is SIGNIFICANTLY thicker than the 2016 (it's advertised here as 2017 I believe but that is not what the publisher says nor I believe is it what it said in my book) edition. Turns out there is a reason for that. While this book definitely has some higher quality diagrams and a new, interesting section on the subject of birds equating to dinosaurs and how they made it into present times, the overall content is extremely watered down and chapters that were previously upwards of ten or fifteen pages have been sliced down to half that. The remaining information is, again, QUITE watery and holds little substantial information. The most in-depth chapter appeared to be the one on flight and how it functions. Cool, but at the expense of the rest of the book? Not only that, but if you want to buy this in the hopes of using its words or figures for any purpose besides plain reading, you have to go to the publisher itself, tell them either 1. How many words you want to use or 2. What figures you want to use, for what purpose, and submit that so they can get back to you with a price on using the content - even for purely educational purposes. Btw, the 2004 edition? Does not contain this problem. As long as you use the citation example presented in the beginning of the book you are allowed to share its contents. Probably the difference between being published in league with Princeton over a private publishing company.Extremely disappointed in this. I bought it because I felt the 2004 edition was a little outdated in some places and I'm trying to gather good resources on internal anatomy for educational purposes. I leafed through this book as soon as I got it (very excited to receive it, I might add!) to make sure it was up to standards before I took a highlighter to it - and it was only that leaf-through needed to show how disappointingly cut-down this book was. I looked into citing it for the better diagrams, but upon discovering it would cost money to do so - this book was promptly returned. If I could have learned something additional from it without citing it, maybe I'd have still kept it. But it's rather a disastrous downgrade from what was obviously a text that had been worked hard on - and 12 years earlier to boot. Just get the 2004 edition. The mechanics of flight and the evolution of birds you can learn just as well from other sources.
